Why? Because it happens to be Earth Day. Our entire raison d’être has to do with supporting technological progress with minimum possible impact on our wonderful planet, Earth.
Earth Day has been celebrated since 1970, the year in which senator Gaylord Nelson first encouraged American students to discuss and generate awareness around environmental issues. A mere 45 years later, Submer was born, a tech-company that concerns itself with helping datacenter owner/operators, cryptominers, AI, 3D rendering and Edge computing innovators progress without wasting precious resources (such as energy and water), while running a viable competitive business.
The idea of Submer was born when Daniel Pope and Pol Valls, co-founders of Submer, considered starting another datacenter business, this time a cutting-edge, highly-efficient, eco-friendly incarnation of the datacenter business Daniel built up, run and sold a decade before.
The Submer founders thought to themselves, “surely in those ten long years, in the age of information, ways had been found to increase the kW/sqm and to reduce the amount of energy and water needed to cool”. They were shocked to find out that despite a few minor tweaks, the industry was still doing things exactly as before, cooling the IT Hardware with air. The only significant improvement made was the introduction of hot and cold zones.
After quickly realising that a totally carbon neutral computing environment is at this time utopian, Pol and Daniel were no longer interested in only building a state of the art datacenter. They tasked themselves with what they could personally do to help the entire industry advance. They seized a relatively old concept, Immersion Cooling, and gave it a practical ultra modern twist, Immersion Cooling which did not require the use of proprietary hardware and which virtually eliminates the consumption of precious water.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead
By 2040, computing will require more energy than the world generates and if that time-scale is hard for you to consider, try understanding that the world’s datacenters already consume more that the entire country of India and that that figure is set to triple over the next decade!
Daniel and Pol have found individuals that share their goals and concerns and that is why at Submer, we never forget our social and environmental responsibility to strive for ever better efficiencies to usher in a new era of sustainable and practical datacenter cooling, looking also to further initiatives to responsibly reuse heat generated, from ensuring our SmartCoolant is biodegradable to sourcing components and raw material sustainably.
Forgive us if these meanderings come across as preachy, that is not our intent. Submer honestly wants to help remind us on this day, Earth Day, and on all days of our collective duty to our planet and our descendants.
If you are a datacenter owner/operator, a cryptominer, indeed if you are involved in cooling of IT Hardware on any scale, remember there IS a better way to do this for today and for the world of tomorrow. Renewable, eco-friendly energy sources and efficient technologies such as our Immersion Cooling solution from Submer together can go a long way to increasing efficiencies and reducing the ever-increasing burden on our Earth.
