How does our technology work? What are the benefits of our liquid cooling solutions? How does our single-phase immersion cooling solution help datacenters and enterprises meet their goals? In this space, we will discuss the most common questions about Submer’s solutions, our technologies, how they work and operate, and the key considerations to help you make an informed decision for your infrastructure.
Is SmartCoolant flammable?
The SmartCoolant is inherently non-flammable. The fire point of the fluid is 174 °C as measured by ASTM D92-18 Pensky-Martens open cup method (equivalent to ISO 2592). The flash point, i.e. the temperature at which vapors can ignite but not stay alight, is 159 °C.
As a hydrocarbon fluid with a fire point of 174 °C, the US NFPA classifies SmartCoolant flammability as 1 on a scale of 0 to 4. This puts the SmartCoolant in the same flammability class as materials like wood and plastic, and less flammable than paper, cardboard, and packing foam (NFPA rating = 2 or higher).
For the combustion of the fluid to occur, three conditions must be met: (1) the entire body of fluid must reach 174°C, (2) there must be an ignition source (e.g., a spark or open flame), and (3) sufficient oxygen must be present. It is important to note that the simultaneous occurrence of these three conditions is very unlikely.
In the rare event of a fire, industry standard passive and active fire protection systems are sufficient.
Can I buy SmartCoolant separately from Submer pods?
SmartCoolant cannot be bought separately from Submer pods. Hardware and fluid must go hand in hand with each other to ensure performance, safety and environmental criteria are met.
Running tests under Submer’s Fluid Validation Program ensures the required quality and compliance levels are met, therefore buying the fluid separately is not possible.
What does Submer’s fluid validation process consist of?
Submer’s Fluid Validation Program consists of a series of tests applied to all our approved fluids to ensure they meet the performance, safety, and environmental criteria required by our customers and industry standards. These tests include checks on dielectric properties, fire safety, material compatibility, longevity, and thermal performance, conducted according to IEC, ASTM, and ISO test methods. This comprehensive validation allows Submer to deliver turnkey immersion solutions with your preferred immersion cooling fluid.
How long does it take to install Submer’s equipment?
Submer pods can be pre-integrated off site, which saves time during the installation phase. Provided all the interconnecting services are in place, setting up the equipment – mechanical, electrical and monitoring -, and filling it up with the immersion fluids takes 2 to 6 hours, depending on the number of pods.
What is Submer’s capacity to deliver at scale?
With many MWs worth of units already deployed and production facilities in Barcelona, Spain and Houston, Texas, our supply chain is ready to deliver at hyperscale.
How do I design for 5x9s availability with immersion cooling?
Take advantage of the 2N CDUs in the SmartPod EXO Twin Tank and connect each of them to a dual independent water supply loop. The same goes for the power supply, connect each CDU to an independent feed via an automatic feed selector such an ATS.
Each CDU can handle 100% of the load and the immersion system is concurrently maintainable.
How does redundancy work in the SmartPod?
The SmartPod EXO Unitank is equipped with a CDU with 2N pumps for improved availability.
The SmartPod EXO Twin Tank is equiped with 2N CDUs, providing concurrent maintainability and each of them being able to handle 100% of the load.
How does Submer approach the barriers to adoption of immersion cooling?
Our full-stack in-house expertise means we make heavy investments into R&D activities and are therefore constantly innovating.
We support and actively contribute to industry organizations, such as the Open Compute Project (OCP) and the Liquid Cooling Coalition (LCC).
Our ecosystem enablement i.e. working hand-in-hand with silicon manufacturers, OEMs and fluid vendors, means we’re educating them and sharing best practices we have learned along the way, as well as supporting the development of immersion-ready products through our validation programs.
What type of servers can be used in Submer pods?
For the most efficient operation and best experience, choose an immersion-born server amongst the many currently available, whether it be 19″, 21″, or OCP.
If you prefer to try with some of your existing servers, only not-sealed HDDs are not submersible. Other than that, a retrofitting process should be followed, mainly consisting of checking the material compatibility of the components, removing the fans, replacing the thermal paste by a compatible TIM – readily available in the market, protecting the labels and, in some cases, replacing the heat sinks by immersion-designed ones for best performance.
